A surface stays cool by having high solar reflectance and high thermal emittance. High solar reflectance lowers solar heat gain while high thermal emittance enhances thermal radiative cooling. Ultimately the more solar energy an object absorbs, the greater the heat build-up. Conversely, the higher the solar reflectance, the cooler an object will stay.
Total solar reflectance is the sum of ultraviolet, visible and near infrared (IR) reflectance. Ultraviolet makes up 5% of the electromagnetic spectrum, visible 43%, and IR 52%.
The 52% long near infrared wavelengths are invisible to the eye yet provide a significant portion of the suns energy heating the earth’s surfaces.
Plasticolors IR reflective technology works to maximize total solar reflectance with focus in the IR region. Proper pigment selection, optimized milling, and tight manufacturing cleanliness practices are all combined to meet the customers required total solar reflectance targets. Dispersions and coatings designed to reflect IR must not be contaminated with IR absorbing materials.
Exterior applications which benefit from this technology include roof coatings, exterior building coatings, automotive interior and exterior, and any other application which can benefit from staying cool.
This technology supports roof coating efforts of the EPA’s Energy Star program, California’s Title 24 building regulations, and other “hot” state cooling initiatives.
