The thickening of unsaturated thermoset polyester resins using alkaline metal oxides-magnesium oxide in particular -has been the challenge when working with sheet molding compounds (SMC), bulk molding compounds (BMC), and thick molding compounds (TMC). The introduction of magnesium oxide initiated an investigation of the mechanism of this thickening reaction resulting in the ability to better control the reaction.
After years of research, Plasticolors formulated Accumag® magnesium oxide thickener, which offer a more consistent thickening response than traditional products.
